sandpaper? knife? a piece of metal to scrape the wood?... try just about anything...

there are some rasps that are self cleaning and work really great though... would make your work a lot easier just to go buy one.

If your considering a file you must have a lot of wood to take off. The best would be a surform tool sometimes called a cheese grater or a wood rasp but if you don't want to buy one then try course sand paper wrapped around anything with the shape your trying to cut. eg: block of wood for a square corner or a piece of dowel rod for a round shape, etc. Good luck!

Glass! If you are shaping a piece of wood, you can do it much more smoothly and much quicker with a piece of glass than anything. What is more, it will cost you nothing. You go to Lowes and ask for glass scraps, they will wrap them in paper and hand them to you no charge. You use the straight edge, holding the glass with gloves with a rubber coating on them, and if you slant the glass toward you and lightly pull, you will take off a small amount, however, if you slant the glass against you, you will take off a larger amount.

I do cabinet making and antique repair and use glass for many things. You have to be careful, wear clothes that are unlikely to be cut by glass, and watch your hands, arms, and legs.

Oh.. using files would be a bit harsh don't you think.. I always use sand paper.. I start out with the course paper and then down to the fine sand paper.
