...His relationship with Jim Henson Company started in 1978, when his mother wrote to Muppet designer Kermit Love about her talented son. Love met with Kevin and invited him to perform on the Muppets float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade where he would meet Jim Henson. This meeting would not get him hired, but Kevin subsequently created an audition tape for Jim Henson. Over the next few years Kevin worked part time for the Jim Henson Company and was hired on fulltime after the "The Great Space Coaster" show ended.

Kevin would go onto greater fame with the Jim Henson Company when he was asked to come up with a voice for a little red Muppet called "Elmo".

He joined Sesame Street in 1984, but was part of the Jim Henson Company before that.

"One day [in 1984], Kevin Clash, a talented puppeteer, raised him up and brought energy and life into Elmo and from that day forward we would all write for Elmo."

But I can't find an earlier citation for him
