They don't think that. Your teacher just tried to put down southerners in a particularly ignorant way, and ended up misleading the students. Not a good thing for a teacher to do.

The Civil War was a tragedy for both sides. The Union won, as a result of the South surrendering, and that is why we have the United States of America.
I lived in Georgia for a while and I must say that the people of the south embrace the civil war as more of their culture than people from the north. I have never heard of anyone thinking that the south won the civil war. If they do think that way they are ignorant of history.

I have never heard that. There are still many expressions used (War between the States, Mason Dixon Line, Northeners, etc) and the Civil War shaped the South into what it is today. Northeners went back to their lives and factory work. Southerners had to rebuild an entirely new way of life. (Not saying the North was fine and dandy; I know they had their struggles too but different circumstances for different situations) Anyways no we do not think we won. In fact why do you think the KKK is so pissed off? They know they lost. :)

They dont want to believe that the South lost. Plus, nothing was ever really changed in the South. Whatever the North did, the South did something to loophole around it. And after President Lincoln was assassinated, all attempts the reconstruct was abadoned, leaving the South to do whatever they wanted as long as they abided to the constitution.
