Caffeine makes you jittery if you have too much. It can be hard to concentrate on ritalin.
Adderall works wonders as would anything amphetamine based.
The state-dependent effect isn't always a for-sure thing that will happen, but if you are cramming the night before, make sure and save some of whatever you use to take before the actual test. It's always good to be alert for the test as well.
Just make sure and don't take acid before an exam. Trust me, it doesn't mesh very well with a full page scantron.

well i don't know if work has anything to do with you not being alert enough. You would do just fine with plenty sleep. Taking alternatives will only trick your brain into thinking that you will need more energy at this particular time...thus get you addicted...like us coffee drinkers....the dollar value is as high as tobacco, and alcohol,we need it.
Take natural vitamin B with some C(C taken later in the day than B, it will contradict each other and the c will not take effect.) Those are natural daily vitamins and not bad for your body.

Caffiene pills (No Doz) are safe and sold over the counter. Its pretty much the same as drinking coffee but with the pills, you can control the dose of caffiene you are getting. If alertness is a problem, try studying first thing in the morning.

Rather than taking a pill, try going for a brisk walk in the fresh air or taking a 20 minute nap (set the alarm for 30 minutes). This has always worked better for me than caffeine or anything else.

Caffeine pills, or metabolife will do it. Just be careful. If your heart feels fluttery or starts beating too fast you have to stop. Also, put some vapo rub under your nose to help stay alert.

Ritalin is good if you have any brain damage but anything stronger tends to induce state dependant learning where you need to get in the same state again for the exam.
