Why do we americans think that we are superior to every other country?

We think that we have the best education, government, culture, technology, military,etc. We think that everyone else wants to be like us. Being so arrogant has made us a lot of enemies. I think we need to be afraid. And not just of the middle east. I think we are very vulnerable and could easily be devasted because not only are we arrogant, we are naive. Our government tries to be so nice and accomodating to everyone else that they take advantage of us and us our own stuff against us. When are we going to start taking care of ourself? We are so weak from taking care of everyone else that we are an easy target and we are too arrogant to realize it. Anyone else agree?

Many of you have given some great answers but let me be more clear. I do love this country. I just don't think we give other countries enough credit. A country needs more than freedom to thrive. We have to be smart with our resources and relationships. Otherwise we will only be free to protect ourselves from everyone else who was smart enough to strengthen their own country.

The naivety of some of the answers to this question are scary.
China and India are countries that have expanding populations and economies, also nuclear weapons. The person who answered that the States is the only super power left is mistaken, China is definitely a super power.

The recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have shown that you may have the greatest war machine in the World but it still cannot have it all it's own way

History has shown us that all the great Empires come to an end, the Roman, the Hapsburg and the British to name but a few. History has also shown us that there has to be more than just a well equipped Army to impose one's views on the rest of the World or one country, this was seen in Vietnam.

I am English and I am quite disappointed at some of the American responses on here, some just seem to have this ' whoop and holler', Gung Ho mentality of saying lets just go and kick **** without any thought of consequences of actions in the long term.

The Taliban were US supported and funded, so was Saddam and so was Osama Bin Laden and you have to be very careful that in trying to rid the World of these tyrants ,that you do not unwittingly create other beasts that you will have to dispose of in another10 years.

Personally I have never thought that we are superior to every other country. I love America and am glad I live here, but there are a lot of other wonderful countries out there.

I agree with your comment that "Our government tries to be so nice and accomodating to everyone else that they take advantage of us and use our own stuff against us." I would never say that I am against free speech or freedom of the press, but I can't help thinking that it can be horrible for our image in the world. As citizens we have been blessed with the right to give our country a black eye. And the media knows that it will sell more papers/get more viewers if they play up and sensationalize scandals rather than reporting on tamer things. So it's like the media has as their goal to uncover anything and everything scandalous about our country and its politicians. Which as a result makes our country look bad.

i totally agree, omi gosh, i have friends from so many countries and we always talk about issues etc. The only ones I can't, and my freinds have also told me this in their expierinces, is the Americans. Omi gosh, the think that they are the best and the only. I think it's cuz they are world leader and problem is they are so far away from the rest of the world. Europe has so many countries in it and they are all so close to all the other continents, whereas we're so far over here across the ocean. THey think that the info they have is the reliable source and if you say something that goes against the american way then it's like your so disrespectful and how could u and so on. They are soo frusterating. They have done many good things of course I know that, its' a totaly cool country, just there so friggin arrogant and ignorant drives me nuts, i dont like to talk about 'real' things with them. It has to do with durning the Cold War in the 1950's after World War 2. Then we were superior to other nations cuase we hadnt been through war, we still had land, thriving economy and buissnesses and such. While the rest of the world was striken with poverty and stuff like that. And ever since then we've been seen as the top country in the World. We provide an opprotunity for everyone, as a so-called democracy.

I have a question. I do not understand at all why Blair went along with Bush.
The only thing I could think of , other than the obvious (he was drunk, blackmailed, or stupider than he seems), was that he was really trying to position England in the EU relative to France and Germany and, if Iraq had worked he could have used that success as muscle in EU politics and issues.

It still to answer the question of why he did not know that Iraq was going to fail when everyone with any knowledge of the Middle East knew that a civil war would be the outcome. It did not matter if we went in with 400,000 troops – we would still in the same position right now, And, didn’t Blair knno that so much more could have been accomplished in Afghanistan. I don’t mean catching OBL. I mean working to help the Afghan people and giving their country a helping hand.

Most Americans don’t know that Afghanistan is a total loss.
Most Americans don’t know that Iraq is a total loss.
Most Americans don’t know that we are losing the war on terror.
They think Bush has prevented attacks.
They think we are safer.

They have their heads in the sand.

They really do not know about China. Maybe that’s a good thing.
They don’t know of the modern cites and construction that is more than America and Europe combined.
They don’t know that Donald Trump can’t get concrete because China is buying almost all of it.
China will be the number one in the world. America and the EU will be competing for the Silver and Bronze.

And - the best for last.
Americans don’t know about evolution. It’s spooky, like living in a society with airplanes that still thinks the earth is flat.
And, our ignorant white-trash conservative Christians think the bible is an instruction book for life.

I agree that we need to start taking care of ourselves. If we can't prevent aids in our own country how can we defeat aids in Africa. why do we worry so much about the poor in other countries when we have poor people here in our own country. America is spending It's way into bankruptcy trying to solve the worlds problems. I don't agree with the part you wrote about the middle east. Middle Easterner's don't just hate America, they despise western government and culture as a whole. the Muslims clerics and imams fear secular government and a free people. they fear the natural rights of man.

Well I don't feel superior to people in other countries, it is just we export our way of life, through movies and business and war, and I do agree we need to take care of our selves for a while, It is our policies that have made us enemies, and wars we don't belong in. But it is the liberal press that have encouraged the negative reactions we get around the world, they are a hate America entity and they promote it also. And their are liberals that are trying to turn us into a socialist country so in their eyes we do everything wrong. So people around the world reads, what our press puts out.

You Know, when I first read your question I was gonna say something smart **** like "because we are", but after I read the rest of your Question I have to be sincere and say I agree, you are right.

We need to get serious if we love our country and want to protect it for our children. We need to stop being afraid of offending and take back our country. Stop letting the government ( politicians ) tell us what we are going to do and start demanding satisfaction.

Because we are! This country provides more freedom and opportunity to people than any other country in the world. You even have the freedom to leave if you would rather be somewhere else. I wish people like you would take advantage of that freedom and go live with your friends somewhere else.

I agree with some of the things you said, I spent 30 years in the US Marines fighting for your freedom and many other countries freedom. you are right when you say are government tries to Please everyone, That;s the Demoncrats speaking! We need to keep fighting the terrorists, I can't believe people don't get it! We are vulnerable, but it is not only from the terrorists but from within. We can't fight the war on terror, while we are fighting the war within. Dem's and Repub's need to work together, not fight each other, That's the problem.
