To aid them in swallowing their prey whole. If they had attached ribs, they could not expand enough to allow that to happen.

They have no sternum. Snake skeletons only consits of skull, back bone, ribs, and tail (which is part of the backbone I guess)

Mostly because they don't have sternumns, collar bones, or shoulder blades... of pelvises, etc.

Snake skeletons are fascinatingly different than human- each set of ribs acts like a pair of legs in many ways. pretty dang cool!
