Turn the tables on them when they start asking questions of you. Ask questions back.
Or when they say their name, act so SURPRISED and say, oh my goodness, "Jane" (or whatever they say their name is) it has been SO LONG since you called me. How have you been? How's your mama, your daddy, etc...etc...
Don't give them a chance to get a word in edgewise. Or start a routine about how lonely you were tonight, that you were praying for someone to call for you to talk to and then the phone rings, it's them...and your prayers were answered. It totally and completely throws them off balance. Or ask for a phone number to call them back at their home at a more convenient time for YOU!
Of course, they will say no, and then you can say, OH I see--it's okay for you to call me at my home, but I cannot call you? That is not fair. Solicitors can be quite entertaining fodder...
Have fun!

Tell them that you have your number blocked for solicitors. It's against the law to call someone if they have restricted you from calling them. They get really scared and go into all these apologies. Try it next time.

I think it's rude that someone I don't know and didn't give permission to call me does. How do they know that I am not "busy" this is my home. Maybe I work nights and sleep days, maybe I am making love. Maybe I am giving birth and expecting a call from the Mid-wife?
All solicitation is rude.

i got a call from one tonight, I told him im in the middle of supper, call me back later" which i was. other times i just say i dont have time to talk, call me bak later, but you have to be serious & immediately hang up when youre done talking because they dont give up. As long as you dont curse somebody out. Next time you get a minute then give them your undivided attention. but be firm if you dont want to talk

what works even better is to say to them hold on a second and just lay the phone down and ignore it like you put them on hold. sooner or later they're gonna hang up but think of all their time you got to waste.

Ask them nicely to put your name on the "do not call" list. Then hang up.
