Polyester = Poly Ester = many esters.

Esters are a type of chemical typically derrived from alcohols. This means they are man-made. In modern manufacture those alcohols might be derrived from oil, but I'm not sure if they are or not.

At any rate, polyester is a plastic type compound consisting of many (different) esters blended together and formed into strings by an artificial means. These strings are used to weave fabric, with or without the addition of natural fibers such as cotton or wool.

all i know: It is made of the ester of poly.
From wiki:
Polyester is a category of polymers, or, more specifically condensation polymers, which contain the ester functional group in their main chain. Usually, polyester refers to cloth woven from polyester fiber. Polyester clothing is generally considered to have a "less natural" feeling to it compared to natural fibers. Polyester fibers are often spun together with fibers of cotton, producing a cloth with some of the better properties of each.

Close-up of a polyester shirtAlthough polyesters do exist in nature (e.g., in the Cutin of the Plant Cuticle), polyester generally refers to the large family of synthetic polyesters (plastics) which includes polycarbonate and above all polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is one of the most important thermoplastic polyesters.

Polyesters are a class of synthetic material made by chaining esters together. The most common is polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polycarbonate is another well known example. There's no simple or quick answer to what they are made of, mostly hydrocarbons though.

Polyester is a man-made polymer (plastic). Polyester fibres are spun together (like cotton) to make clothing.
