use neutrogena, their face wash or their facial bar. use this once in the morning and once at night, with a face cloth and warm water.
rinse your face after you exercise
do not pick at your blackheads!
other things that might help include:
having short bangs
avoiding touching your face (you may get bacteria that might cause more acne)
carrying around a pack of blotting papers in your purse
using oil-free lotion
some people think it also has to do with avoiding greasy foods or spicy foods, but i'm not sure about that! :)

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.
In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.
Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.
In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.
If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

You have to start with a clean face. I reccomend a facial cleanser with the antibacterial ingredient Triclosan. Cleanse your face with that at least twice a day (Morning and Evening). After you cleanse your face, you need to use a topical acne treatment. I reccomend a bottled astringent with 2 percent Saylic Acid. If you have light to moderate acne, that should be enough in the treatment department. If you have moderate to heavy acne, you will need an additional step. For that I reccomend a topical spot treatment with *no more* than two percent Benzoyl Peroxide. You can either spot treat with it and rub it over individual acne spots or you can rub a *thin* layer all over your face! Do this once a day, preferably at night. (Warning: Benzoyl Peroxide *can* stain fabric so becareful what it comes in contact with prior to drying on your skin) If you have dry skin, you can use a moisturizer, but make sure it has an SPF of at least 15 , make sure it's non pore clogging and make sure it's safe for acne prone skin. If you wear makeup, make sure it's non pore clogging and hypoallergenic and make sure you remove it every night...no matter what! Lastly, avoid any unessecary touching of the skin and drink lots of water.
For reference, here are the products I use:
Cleanser- Clearasil Daily Acne Control Cleanser
Astringent- Neutrogena Clear Pore Astringent
Moisturizer- Laura Mercier
Makeup- Laura Mercier oil-free tinted moisturizer

Proactiv is good, but expensive. I've found a cheaper alternative that works just as well.
Wash your face at least once a day with a face wash (I use Clean & Clear Sensitive Skin Foaming Facial Cleanser because you can use it to remove eye makeup, which you can't do with regular acne wash).
At night before you go to bed, use a product with 2 to 3 percent benzoyl peroxide all over your face (I use Neutrogena On the Spot lotion). Because benzoyl peroxide increases your skin's sensitivity to the sun, make sure you wear sunscreen on your face every day. I don't like heavy makeup, so I just use a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 to get both things out of one product.
In the morning before you put on your makeup, use a product with about 2 percent salicylic acid all over your face (I use Neutrogena Clear Pore Treatment).
Hope this helps!

Proactive really does work. It's not just plugged by Jessica Simpson. But, I've had acne from as far back as I remember and now have crystal clear skin. All I did was use a loofa. Seriously, it hurts at first but scrub your face. Not hard enough to scrub your skin off or anything like that, but hard enough to get the dirt, grease and grim out of your pores. Try to use less make-up and don't pick at your zits... it only spreads the bacteria. I had prescribed cremes, pills, over the counter cremes... I mean I tried everything. But what worked for me was just washign my face regularly and resisting the urge to pick my face and make it worse. My mother uses proactive and she has clear skin too, for the first time since I was born at least. So- I do recommend that.

I suffered from acne all my life until I made the switch to mineral makeup with SPF 15. There are a lot of brands of mineral foundation out there, but I go for the Bare Minerals brand, which I think was the original. I think it may be the light barrier that the mineral makeup provides that keeps out environmental dirt, pollution, germs, sun - whatever it was that was irritating my skin - but somehow it works for me. When I went camping recently and didn't take my makeup (only sunscreen), I broke out after two days. I thought then that there must be a connection. Good luck! ps: Toner is a good idea too - just make sure that it is the right kind for your skin. There are lots of alcohol free toners that cleanse and exfoliate, but don't irritate the surface layers.

Use proactive-it's the best. Also, to moisturize, use a moisturizer like Clean and Clear's or Oil of Olay's moisturizer with sylethic acid- helps prevent blemishes. As a foundation, I like Revlon's Colorstay Soft 'n Flex for oily/normal skin.
Do not use MAC products- they will make you break out.

I wear as little makeup as possible on my face, that means no powder, no foundation, NOTHING. (only eyes and lips) I wash my face twice with oil free cleanser and once with any neutrogena cleanser (helps unclog pores and close them so no more dirt gets in them). Then I put on Cetaphil lotion just incase my skin gets too dry and go to sleep. Usually when i wake up my skin is much better than it was yesterday. Repeat this process in the morning and night. (you can get away with not doing it in the morning though and just washing your fasce with one cleanser) Good luck!
