Albert Pujols deserves the NL MVP. One could consider that there are other candidates such as David Wright, Carlos Beltran, and Lance Berkman, but the decision will ultimatley be between Ryan Howard and Albert Pujols.
While Ryan Howard has produced one of the more spectacular individual seasons in MLB history, Albert Pujols is the more complete player and has carried the Cardinals all season. Aside from the contributions of Scott Rolen, Pujols has single handedly kept the Cardinals in 1st place of the Central Division. This despite the fact that he missed a total of 17 days to an injury at a time when he was his hottest. Ryan Howard has had the support of Bobby Abreu, Jimmy Rollins, Pat Burrell, and especially Chase Utley during the season. All of these players are taken on fantasy rosters, while Rolen and Pujols are probably the only Cardinals' offensive players on fantasy roster aside from Duncan.
Ryan Howard has produced in some key categories mainly HR and RBIs, but if you look at the rest of the statistics Pujols leads the pack even by playing 16 fewer games than Howard. Pujols leads in: Runs, Doubles, K (he has nearly 130 fewer strikeouts), OBP, SLG, OPS, and AVG. Pujols is behind Howard by only 9 Hits, 11 RBIs, and 9 walks. The only category in which Howard is dramatically superior to Pujols is HR where he leads 57 to 46. What's even more suprising about this is that Pujols has the higher SLG % even though he has fewer HRs.
The reason I bring up the statistics is that when Pujols was fighting Bonds for MVPs a couple years ago everyone was looking to certain statistics to justify Bonds as the MVP. Overall Pujols had better statistics than Bonds, but still failed to garner the MVP because of some of Bonds "magic" stats that awed the voters. While Howard's stats are impressive I don't believe they garner the "awe" factor that some of Bonds stats did.
Lastly, the voters do look at postseason eligibility as a factor in determining the MVP. Pujols is most certainly going to the playoffs, while Howard is a question mark at this time.
In the American League the decision is much more difficult as you have several candidates including Jeter, Ortiz, Dye, and I'll also include Santana. I think Jeter deserves the AL MVP because he has carried that team through all its injuries and led it to the best record in the American League. Plus, Jeter plays stellar defense which should be a factor in deciding an MVP. Santana has performed exceptionally well, but the AL Cy Young award is giving for pitching performances. Now if Santana had won 25+ games, had a low 2.00 ERA, WHIP around 1.00, and nearly 300 Ks, then maybe that would be such an exceptional performance as to warrant the MVP. Dye and Ortiz don't get the nod because Dye's team isn't going to the playoffs (I know this isn't necessarily a factor, but many people consider it), and Ortiz unfortunately is a DH -- if he broke batting records then maybe he could win the MVP.

I also think that Jeter for the AL and Beltran for the NL why because this guys carried their teams all year long and both have giving New York's teams the early passed to the playoff. They are naturally born leaders they helped their teams inside the field and out the field when something is going wrong. They both have gold glove defense and not a lot of people have that. They help their teams defensively, offensively, and emotionally and that's something Howard neither David Ortiz knows how to do and will not be able to do ever. MVP award doesn't just stands for the best offensive player in the year or the best defender u have to have both and a little more than that u have to lead your team into victory anyway u can.

The Muffin Man is retarded, someone smack him.
AL MVP - Jeter, the Yankees managed to wind up in first without Matsui, without Cano, without Sheffield, and with ****** slumping the entire season. Who cares how many homers he hits, its being valuable. Put any other shortstop in there, and they too would get booed like A-Rod and they certainly would not be hitting .340 as a Yankee.
NL MVP - Ryan Howard, the Phillies have a nobody pitching rotation, they got rid of Bob Abreu, Rowand has been out the whole year, and Rollins and Utley haven't done anything after their hit streaks. The only reason the Phillies still have a chance is because of him hitting game winning jacks every single day.

You guys need to stop thinking power wins MVP's. Pujols is my NL canidate. Unlike Howard, Pujols never slumped, he always did what needed to be done. Just because of Howard's homers and RBI's, Pujols can't get any credit. He has great power, drives in a ton of runs, and always gets on base. Pujols didn't have much to work with. Howard had Utley, Rollins, and Bell's great defense. Pujols didn't get as much help from Carpenter, Eckstein, Rolen, or Edmonds.
AL: Jeter I'm not going to argue or agree with you stupid Yankees and Red Sox fans.

i will go with jeter and pujols.
the cardinals are nothing with out pujols. had he not got hurt earlier in the season he would be leading the nl with home runs. plus he is the most consistent player over the last 5 years. babe ruth didnt start his career off the way pujols has and jeter is mr yankee. how can you not give it to him. pay rod sucks, no matsui sheffield williams or giambi, but jeter has been jeter all year.

Unless the Phillies get in as a wild card, it'll go to Beltran for NL.
As much as it pains me, I have to agree with the Jeter bid for AL.

AL - David Ortiz
NL - Ryan Howard
Both are having tremendous offensive seasons. Howard is off the charts, and Ortiz might have even better numbers if not for his injury.
