My doctor set my induction date because I am overdue. He told me to come in on Sunday evening at 6pm and they are going to use cytotech to "ready my cervix" and another dose at 10pm. Then I will stay overnight and if I don't start laboring they will start pitocin at 6am.
I didn't know much about induction because my first came naturally so I agreed with the doctor and he made the appointment.
Anyways, I decided to do some research on the internet about cytotech. All I could find were bad things about it, like it is not approved for labor induction by the FDA, and bad experiences from other women. What should I do? Does anyone else have any experience with cytotech? Should I just trust my doctor because he is my doctor or should I just refuse it? What would you do?
Also what should I expect to happen if I recieve the dose of Cytotech?

I've seen the same thing doing research about Cytotech,it is a very dangerous medication that IF it is given,it can cause your uterus to rupture & cause death in you & your unborn baby. It's good that you have done research on it,as you also know it is NOT FDA APPROVED.I would simply let your doctor know about your concerns about him using Cytotech and prefer not to use it for an induction, there are other medications, that are safer to use & safer to control in case of emergency should arise,in Cytotech once it has been given orally or vaginally, the effects can not be stopped, but if you use Cervadil or Pitocin for your induction, that would be a much more safer drug than Cytotech, and just because your doctor suggest that Cytotech should be used, doesn't mean you should trust him/her for that, all in all cause they are doctors, its always best to do your own homework researching the net about these kind of things.Good Luck to you.

A couple of my friends had to have the same thing done with there kids, I did not with any of mine, but they used the same things as you are about to and all went fine. If anything the cytotech didn't work and then they started the pitocin. So either way it will all be okay, but if your gut is sayn hey I don't like this then I am sure the doctor will take another route. Just make sure to let him know. Goodluck and CONGRATS

I was induced with my little girl at 38 weeks and i only had 7 hours of labor. I went in to get the cream on my cervix i sayed for like 5 hours then i went home i had to be back at 5 in the morning during the night so many women went into labor that i had to sit in a hospitality room tiol 10:30 am, finally they got me in a room and started the pitocin by noon it took me 3 hours to get to 4 cm then i got my epidurial that was the hardest part was geting to 4 cm after that i went to 10 in like 30 min and i pushed about an hour and she was born. so my experience was quite pleasant and i will have the same procedure done in 11 days with my son so i think it is great and safe good luck

Both of my children were born with the induction process and my Dr. used pitocin. I had no problems with it, and had a very complicated pregnancy with my youngest. In comparison to the alternate drugs they can and will use if no results occur, I would opt for the pitocin. All it is, they start the IV and hook up the bag of drug. They monitor your contraction times and how strong they are. If you are not getting to where they think you ought to be, they will increase the pitocin. Once they get to the point they need you to be at to deliver they will take you off the med. Don't worry, all of your stats will be monitored fully, and you will have a beautiful baby. It does speed things along, and the faster the better, you will get to meet your new little person.

If you don't feel comfortable with something, don't do it. It's your body and your child. Have you tried some natural induction procedures such as nipple stimulation or having intercourse? I have never had cytotech so I don't know what will happen, I had my dr. strip my membranes and I went into labor with my son a couple of hours later.

First you need to bring this up with your doctor. Ask if there are other options and ask about cervidil. it is used to soften "ripen the cervix. It IS approved. If he/she balks you need to assert your right to participate in and make decision about your own care. There may be valid reasons for using this medication and many medications are "OFF LABEL" usage... This means that they have side effects that are just as benificial as there justified usage, they just have not gone through fda approval for that specific usage.
BENADRYL is one. it is used to treat allergy symptoms as an antihystimine, but is also used to treat nausea, motion sickness, and is used as a sleep aid.
Also just because you hear bad things about something does not mean its bad. ever notice that when you do something realy nice or good it goes unnoticed, but when you screw up everyone notices?

I would wait until my baby decided to be born. I was induced with pitocin for my son and his birth was horrible! If I could do it over, I would wait for him to be ready.
I would Never do what my Dr. told me simply becasue he was my Dr. then agian, I had midwives and they gave me options and supported me.
I did not have an epidual with any of my births. The combo of pitiocin & no pain meds is not a choice I would make agian either.
My advice, TRUST YOU. Trust your body, trust nature to run its course.
