to actually kick on does it have to be physically connected??

Not for long...............only until your battery goes dead.

Rectifier and regulator are built into the same package on 1980's Hondas.
Rectifier changes AC from your alternator to DC.
Regulator controls voltage level.
You will need to replace it or you won't go far.
If you just charge the battery and ride it until it dies, you will wear out the battery really fast. They are not made for repeated charge/discharge cycles.

Your bike will run if the battery is at full charge and when the battery dies the bike will stall

The Rectifier is the regulator for the charging system for the bike.
This along with the alternator keeps charge to your battery to operates your lights and ignition system.

Just like the first two people said, it will run until the battery drains, then stop.

It will run longer with no lights on.. but will slowly drain the battery
