If your proposition is true, then I would think it is because women tend to be more sensitive to what they see as cruelty to animals than men are. That is not to suggest men are cruel to animals or insensitive, but many women become vegetarian early, when they discover how animals for food are raised and slaughtered. There is also a sense that there is something less than masculine about being a vegetarian. Just as many men would be uncomfortable taking up knitting or watching Martha Stewart, they feel a social pressure to not act like a wimp. Sad but true.

David S. almost had it nailed, but then he petered out in social science baffelgab. Now, the problem has to be defined by whether you are speaking of moral vegetarianism or health vegetarianism. We can easily dispense with health vegetarianism because of the obvious health implications of not eating what is perceived as a " toxic " substance. Now, on to moral vegetarianism; if it is true that more woman are vegetarians than men, we can use some evolutionary biology concepts and concepts from neurobiology, to frame the problem, some what. Despite what has been said by some, the emotional range of men and woman vary. Moral vegetarians tend to give many more emotional reasons for why they are vegetarians, well articulated and complicated reasons. Again, articulation between the sexes varies. Men, on average, are less sensitive to many of these type issues. For example, the variance in response to a child's normal feeding changing, and myriad other minor distress cries, varies between the sexes, though the response to major distress cries is the same. In my on area of interest, dog handling/behavior,woman make superior trainers of companion dogs, but attack dog training ( for police ) is almost a male monopoly. The difference in testosterone load and the greater upper body strength are indirect indicators of the possibility, if true, of women being more inclined to vegetarianism than men.

For me, it has nothing to do with my weight. I have been a vegetarian for about nine years. I started when I was five (just a short while after I learned what a vegetarian was) because I didn't like the lunch meat my mom kept giving me, lol. But I STAYED a vegetarian because I read about how most animals were treated when raised for meat. It's just a terrible thing to discover.

More women than men are involved in any sort of quackery or psuedo-spirituality. Whether palm reaiding, seances, telepathy, pop psychology, crystal healing or vegetarianism women are the main participants and always have been.

That doesn't mean that men are more rational, just that men are more conservative. Men are less inclined to make lifestyle changes without any evidence.

Interestingly enough when you confine your samples to professions that value rationality and critical thinking (scientists, engineers, military officers etc) women are no more likely than men to support any sort of quackery, including vegetarianism.

Firstly I'd like to see some data for your premise, which sounds a little iffy , but in the spirit of why it might be so, here are a few possibilities:

1) Women may be more particular about what they eat in general.

2) Women may be more aware of the issues of farm animal mistreatment caused by factory farming methods.

3) Vegetarian diets tend to be healthier, higher fiber, lower fat, (& the type of fat tends to be of the healthier variety) more phytonutrients, less heaviness in the stomach & less caloric density than a meat-rich diet. These are qualities women are used to habituating themselves to in dietary terms anyway, & certainly more on average, than men.

To cast such a broad net is to have very large holes; these sweeping generalizations are not meant to apply to all & certainly don't apply to many individuals.

;-)

Women are more concerned about their weight and their figures. Men don't care as much. Some men think it's "unmanly" to be a vegetarian.

No offense, yet why would all of us be a vegetarian? I propose, we are carnivores! We eat meat! i'm friends with some vegetarians, yet I disagree with them. to place it this type, i does certainly no longer date a vegetarian guy, nor cook for him. Caucasian. Meat is healthful! some people on listed here are loopy! "All issues carefully." Come on people!

Because women have to worry about body fat more than guys do. Men have more muscle mass and need meat more in their diets. I personally love a good steak.
