You may be thinking of Galen, a Greek who died in 200 AD, who was a famous physician. His work in this area was pretty much the basis of all medicine for the next 1000 years. He did most of his work on animals, as human dissections were considered inappropriate; as a result, his understanding of how the body worked was somewhat flawed. I saw a wonderful program on him on the History channel. His work was so respected that no new advances in medicine were made until the Renaissance.

if you mean modern anatomy, Andreas Vesalius (1514-64) of Padua, Italy.

An Italian surgeon who published an illustrated book of anatomical observations ,called 'The Fabric of the Human Body'
.
His lectures at the university of Pisa were very popular. His ideas
were disseminated through out Europe.

Several million years ago a small squirrelish creature named an Opidium moved into the trees from the grass land to avoid predators, it started evolving to have a body well suited for the trees, it was a human ancestor. It grew longer arms and the ever important opposable thumb, useful for haning on to branches.

People have been studying human anatomy ever since the first caveman killed his neighbor and decided which parts to eat ... and which leftover parts to give to his wife.

Of course, if she didn't like the parts he gave her, then he didn't get to ... uh ... study her anatomy.
