Just look at the situation in the middle east and you will find the answer. Oil is the most crucial commodity in the world and unfortunatley it is one of the main sources of wars in the mid. east and why the Americas are in constant battle about this product. If we started eliminating fuel/oil based cars, it would set the world in chaos in terms of trade etc. We have put it up on such a high pedestal, it's almost impossible to simply switch to electric or other cleaner fuel sources. This boggles my mind when I think that each continent has its own sources of oil/gas and why we have to import/export it (especially over the sea which causes too many oil spills and loss of wildlife etc.) is something that was started a long time ago and the U.S. & Middle East probably will never change their ways since they have so much at stake, especially in what matters to them most...$$$$!

For several reasons. The foremost one is cash flow of course. When they do built fuel efficient vehicles, like the ones that run on electric with a small gasoline engine to keep the battery charged, everyone ooooohs and aaaahhhhhhhhhhs about it, but they don't sell.
Then of course there is the case that most thinking people who have researched out the claim realize that global warming doesn't exist.
With those two facts, the manufacturers continue to make vehicles that actually sell.

Automakers are businesses, and like any business, they exist to make money. That means, they will sell exactly what the people demand. Right now, a hybrid car costs more (on average) than a conventional car. And up to now, the American people haven't been willing to pay the extra money (at least, not as a majority). That's why the overwhelming majority of cars you see at dealers are conventional, with just a few hybrids.
As soon as the American people start demanding hybrids (i.e., start ordering them from dealers at a greater rate than conventional cars), I guarantee you the automakers will start making more of them.
But right now, they cost more than the average auto buyer wants to pay.

Start up your own Auto Manufacturing company and then make the cars you believe the people should drive.
The other auto makers will continue to make the cars people want to buy.
Then we will be able to see who is correct.
In a capitalist economy the market will always be right. So, if you are correct the people will flock to buy the cars you decide they should drive.

Auto companies only care about the bottom line and that is selling cars or trucks and they survey the people on what they want and now everyone wants high horsepower vehicles with a lot of room in them and all the amenities.

Automakers make what people want to buy. If people don't what to shell out more money for a more enviromentally friendly car, or sacrifice power. then the automakers won't make them. But now that more people want them then they are starting to take off.
