am unsure as what you mean by maintain.. do you want to clean the mineral bed.. if so use a product called iron out it will clean your bed and restore it for use after backwash, the iron out goes directly into the brine mixture...has your softener been out of service for awhile if so you may need to replace the mineral in the softener unit,, hope this helps a bit if not go to manufactures web page for info. Depends on the type of softener. If a salt tank is involved use 1/4 cup of iron out in brine tank every two weeks. And 1/4 cup household bleach every other two weeks in brine tank.
