I'm working my way through college and try to acquire as many side jobs as possible. I just got done painting a co-workers house (well, only the trim & gutters, etc.) and was curious as to what I should be paid. I'd never done a paint job before, and was curious what my rate should be. They had the materials, I brought the ladders, and 7 hours later the job was done. Any suggestions?

Depends on how close you are with him. I'd say if he's a friend $10 $15 an hour. Look at it this way. Is the guy letting you do the work to help you out with extra cash? If yes than he's not gonna expect to give you more than $100, at least I wouldn't. Cause he could do it himself for free. On the other hand if he was in the market for a painter and couldn't afford a pro. Than you have an opening for more $$$. Painter charge $30 an hour or more and a minimum amount of hours. So it could cost him $250 - $300 a day. The better deal you can give him the more likely he'll tell others about you and the more jobs you'll get. Just ask him not to guarantee a price to others so you won't get into disputes when they wonder why you charged them a little more.
