some states allow this. check your state guidelines. beware of the difference between salvage and junk there is a difference a salvage title in most states are transferable into salvage rebuilt titles with proper safety inspections and legal to drive thereafter. as junk titles/reciepts are junk and cannot be applied for after junked unless junked in error form is filled out by the junkor, therefore standing would be back to a good title. you can keep a salvage car as long as you like and not pay taxes on it until you apply for the rebuilt title and put it on the road

A salvage titled car can be an extremely great bargain. I've owned 4 salvage titled vehicles and other "clean titled" vehicles. I've had better luck with the salvaged titled cars. I don't care what kind of title a "used" car has. If you're buying "as is" you could be buying a pig in a poke, no matter what. Even brand new cars aren't always reliable, else-wise there wouldn't be a "Lemon Law" on the books. So you take a chance no matter what. I am still in possession of 2 salvage cars. One has a "cleaned' title and Car Fax tells that its accident free, (but it has been wrecked, you can easily tell) so you can't completely trust anything. The car was sold to me by a reputable dealership as a clean titled car, but I knew what I was doing so I got them to almost give it to me. The other car has a salvage title. I bought it in 2001 with 28K on it and it has 157K on it now. It still has the original battery in it! I've never had trouble getting "full coverage" and I didn't have trouble getting a loan on it either.

It will always be on record as a salvage car. That much I do know.

You can't get collision or comprehensive insurance on it to the best of my knowledge.

If you don't get all your answers on here, I would suggest asking the guys at askautopro.com. They seem to know everything.

Not to be mean, but really if youre asking this question, you probably shouldnt buy one. They can be great deals if you know what youre looking for and you plan on keeping it for yourself. A salvaged car can be hard to get rid of,hard to ever get perfect and the papertrail that follows it can get annoying too.

You can probably get it registered if it's been repaired, but it might need to be inspected first, depending on your state. You'd have to have the title changed over.

Also, you might have a hard time getting an insurance company to give you collision & comp coverage on it, so you'd better pay cash.
