I know exactly what you mean. I think it has something to do with nostalgia, but like you, I can't explain it. I remember very clearly about fifteen years ago, it was a beautiful fall day in an old classic neighborhood in Denver; the leaves were turning and there were pumpkins on the porches, just a beautiful day. I felt elation at how great everything around me was, but sad I had no one to share it with. It was a very sharp feeling of melancholy, no other way to explain it.

Melancholy is a feeling of depression, mournful, sadness,
ect. But it is surprising just how many people believe that
word has to do with "beauty." Because melancholy doesn't
"sound" like it would be a word connected to sadness or depression. It sounds peaceful & loving.

Melancholy is a mood disorder AKA clinical depression. It's a manifestation of a chemical imbalance of epinephrine and serotonin in the brain. It's generally thought to be caused by repressed anger and in men repressed rage due to testosterone.

Melancholia (Greek μελανÏολια) is a mood of non-specific depression. It is characterised by low levels of enthusiasm and low levels of eagerness for activity. It was previously described as a distinct disease as early as the fifth and fourth centuries BC in the Hippocratic writings. It was characterized by "aversion to food, despondency, sleeplessness, irritability, restlessness," as well as the statement that "Grief and fear, when lingering, provoke melancholia". It is now generally believed that melancholia was the same phenomenon as what is now called clinical depression.

I vaguely know where the word comes from, and I think it's healthy to have this emotion/feeling as long as it doesn't drag you down. I also think that people need it in order to feel joy or happiness because without it we can NEVER really know what joy or happiness is like.
