It is probably because of the formatting of the worksheet.
You can adjust the format type by selecting the area to format, then
> Select the area of the wroksheet to format
> Right-click and select 'Format Cells'
> Select 'Number' from the 'Category' section
> Choose if you want to include a decimal
> Set to '2' for money currency format
> Set to '0' for no decimal place
> Click 'OK'
That's it!

Note:
Excel is an awesome program, that was written by extremely smart people. It has sooooo many cool functions and features, that it would almost take a lifetime to learn everything that it has to offer.
This is, by far, one of my favorite programs EVER!!!

Sometimes Excel will automatically change the number format of a cell depending on how you type numbers into it. For example, if you type 5/5/5, it will probably turn into a date. To keep this from happening, try putting an apostrophe before the numbers. That will make it display properly (although note that in that case it will no longer work for functions).

You need to reformat the cell, which is the field that you enter in the numbers.
Just select the whole sheet and then click on format and then cells, and choose general or numbers or whatever you want to show.
Good luck.

Highlight the cells in question. In the toolbar at the top, click on Format, Cells, and highlight Text from the menu, click OK. The cells will then show exactly what you type into them.

Right click and select "format cell". Under the "Number" tab (the first tab) there is one of those you need to select, and I'm pretty sure it's "text." If not, just try them and pick the one that keeps the actual number you entered.

go to format>Cells and then change the type you want it to be(date, time, general, etc...)
Sometimes if you put a date it changes it to numbers because of the date system used in Excel.

Have you checked your font setting? Some fonts are actually character symbols.
You can also research about excel on http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx
