I am not--but have been in the situation. I suspect you must be living with someone who is an alcoholic--you should get in contact with al-anon (if you are an adult) or alateen (if kid or teen). You can start my entering those terms in Google or Yahoo.

Alcoholics drink because they are sick. They are addicted to alcohol and can not quit even though they want to.

There are several signs:

1. of course drinking a lot on a regular basis

2. family problems

3. health problems

4. can not stop drinking even if want to

5. legal problems

6. they think they drink to much

7. financial problems

8. lost jobs because of drinking

9. friends and relatives think they drink too much

10. life revolves around alcohol--are powerless over it

11. Do things that are against their moral beliefs

If you are in this situation you need to realize you are powerless to stop an alcholic from drinking and destroying your life. In fact you often become sick as well--this is called co-dependancy--and you will end up actually enabling or facilitating the alcholic to continue being sick. That is why is is important your get help and support and is why I mentioned al-anon and al-ateen. That is something you do for yourself and it might incidentally help the person you are concerned about.

There are things that can be done--sometimes called "interventions" where a bunch of concerned family and or relatives confront the alchoholic and get them to seek treatment. But--that is something you can learn about in the process of getting yourself healthy.

I have never been tested by doctors, hospital, university research centers or anywhere else to find out if I am a biological alcoholic. But my history tells me if I pick up one drink I cannot predict what will happen next-- ever. It used to be the only that I drank was when I was with someone(s) or by myself. At A.A. tables I heard too many times about what constitutes being an alcoholic how one gets to be an alcoholic... all that crap did not mean beans to me. All that was important to me was how not to pick up that one drink. I have not had a drink in some 19 years now but I am still just one thought away from a drink... "F*ck it" In the beginning, alcohol saved my life. My life was so retched, my psyche so assassinated... I need something to numb me, a crutch, a respite from the stress... but it most quickly turned into monster. If this is about you... if you needed to ask the question then it is best to get to A.A.

I know I'm an alcoholic. So I don't drink, but when I was drinking it was to get drunk and to run away from my problems. I felt the need to numb myself so I wouldn't feel the things I was feeling. Of course the problems alcoholics try to run away from are still there, so they just keep drinking to stay away from them. At least that's my perception of alcoholism.

I've been sober now for over 10 years now. The Lord has helped me to deal with my problems and my family and friends have been very supportive.

Stephen King stated the best I've ever heard. A "normal" drinker can just sit and visit and sip their glass of wine. An alcoholic or compulsive drinker can't rest until they've slammed it down. A "normal" drink is satisfied to have a pleasant buzz. An alcoholic or compulsive drinker, drinks to get drunk. You could spend the rest of your life researching this question. Many people have done just that. Go read the AA literature, it's a good place to start.

I used to drink (25 years) because it was the only thing that took the edge off my depression; I was diagnosed with it BEFORE I started drinking.

I tried therapists and psychiatrists and all they did was take my money, feed me drugs that did little or nothing with major side effects, and send me to AA. And everyone tried to convince me that drinking CAUSED my depression.

I finally got a decent therapist, took responsibility for my actions, walked away from AA, and quit.

I look forward to drinking when I get off work.
I'm not sure why, or maybe I just don't want to think about it!
