all top loading washers retain a certain amount of water, they don't drain completely - the pump and hoses are always full of water. i run an empty small load cycle with bleach and a little laundry soap. front loaders drain completely after each cycle and are by far more sanitary.

Yes. I have the same problem. Last week I tried to clean it with bleach, but I noticed that the rubbery seal has a hole in it that is pretty big. Come to think of it, I noticed that water leaks out when I put something unusual like flip flops or sneakers in there. Now I know why the towels can get a moldy smell too.
When I called Maytag, they told me that the warranty service agreement doesn't cover mold damage. I'm not really sure which came first, the tear or the mold. I'll find out next week when the repairman comes.

I had this problem.
It could be one of a few things
the obvious, that you have mildew, in which case do an empty wash with white vinegar (it kills mildew) in the soap compartment and bicarbonate of soda in the softener/conditioner compartment (kills smells) both are totally safe for your machine.
the other thing, and this is whan made my clothes smell, is that your softener compartment is all clogged up and nasty, scummy water is being used instead of softener to finish your wash!. If this is the case, take out the softener drawer and wash it in hot water and pour LOADS of VERY HOT water into the machine this should sort the problem. :)

There may be a washcloth or such caught in the innards. Your best place to start is what you're doing now. You might also want to run an empty cycle w/bleach or vinegar.

Bleach should work, if not try a couple of cups of yellow vinegar in the washer. If this doesn't work, it could be your water that smells and you should check your water softener or call the water department and ask them to check it.

how about trying a half cup of clorox bleach? let it run through a cycle.. i know that bleach kills mildew, if that doesn't do it then you may have a more serious problem, like a leaking pump or pump hose and you may have water problem on the floor under the washer, which is mildewing,,,good luck to you

Run a cup of bleach and regular laundry detergent through a cycle, if that doesn't work try vinegar.

Try running a load with a big bottle of white vinegar. That helps in the dishwasher.
