I've been to Sao Paulo and to some small towns around there. Brazil is beautiful and HOT, even in their wintertime, so be prepared.
I'd say get in touch with a Brazilian travel agency and plan your trip through them and ask to see smaller towns and beaches instead of places like Ipanema or Rio.

What do you mean by the ´tourist thing`. If u don´t wanna visit monuments, historical places, etc you gotta go to the North-East part of Brazil (Bahia, Recife,...). You can find there amazing beaches, paradises on earth, and nice people.

I'm Brazilian and I'm going to Rio de Janeiro with my American boyfriend exactly to do the "tourist thing". You HAVE to go to Copacabana beach, Sugarloaf, Ipanema, and the barbecue place called Porcão. Trust me, it's COOL! We also love going to São Paulo, if you enjoy big cities. And Salvador (Bahia) is awesome, he LOVED. Nice beaches, cheap, and exciting nightlife for singles or couples. Good luck!

Well, form what I understood, you prefer something "off the beaten path". If that's the case you may go to the pantanal, the "chapada dos veadeiros" and other destinations like that. But be prepared because most of these places do not offer much infrastructure. Feel free to email me at astronomer_7000-1@yahoo.com.br giving me more details, and I'll see what I can do for you.
