Debatable. He was certainly a Socialist, but being a peaceful Communist or a peaceful Socialist isn't a criminal act or even necessarily a bad one. There WAS a lot of Communist activity on the streets of America around that time, mostly peaceful enough on the surface, like handing out copies of the Daily Worker. M.L. King, for all his well-known faults, was trying to do what he could for Afro-Americans, and even the staunchly conservative actor Charlton Hesston (Moses, Ben Hur, Marc Antony, and later President of the NRA) marched with King when nobody else had the guts to do so.

That's a fair question.

Kind was under suspicion during the 60s as being a communist because some of his close friends were out-of-th-closet communist. With that note, he always adamantly stated that he wasn't a communist.

All we have to go on is his word because there was never any evidence to the contrary... such as he never attended any communist meetings etc...

They said that because he wanted to change the country. At the time, anyone who wanted to change anything in the US was called unpatriotic and communist.

Dr. King was a Baptist minister and supporter of non-violence. His ideas did, in a way, follow those of true communism - i.e. equality.

"Communism is a radical ideology that seeks to establish a future classless, stateless social organization, based upon common ownership of the means of production and the absence of private property."

I don't believe he supported the idea of common ownership of the state.

Nope, not under the derogatory sense of the word. And besides, the KKK would prolly love it if MLK was a communist, then he'd go out and murder a few million Jews.

And let's all pay attention to what the KKK said/say.

He could have been a demented degenerate and he'd still be light years ahead of the klan in morals and intelligence.

He was a Black Republican, that's one reason the Southern Democrats in the KKK didn't like him. Robert Kennedy wiretaped his phone.
