can anyone tell me the difference between language arts and literature in middle school?

my grandson is in advanced language arts but not literature.

Language arts is the study of your native language and how it evolved.
Literature is study of past and contempory writers and there styles and impact on society.

Literature = Books
Language Arts = Grammar and spelling.
