You can make beads out of wrapping paper. Cut a large sheet of paper into long thin triangles that are about 1" at the base and taper to a point at the other side of the paper. Using a round toothpick, wrap the wide end around it and continue rolling until you reach the point. Apply a small dab of glue under the paper about 1" from the point to the tip to keep the beads shape then seal entire bead with a thin coat of white glue. leave on the toothpick to dry and stand upright in a piece of styrofoam to hold the toothpick securely. Once you get proficient, you will be able to make a bead a minute. String on dental floss with a glass or metal bead between each paper bead to give the necklace or bracelet some weight. Choose wrapping paper that has lots of color and hopefully touches of gold or silver.These beads have a porcelain look when finished. Even colorful magazine pages will work the key is to measure carefully and make each triangle even and the same as all the others. Check out this website to see a group of African women who are doing this for a living and changing their families lives. Very inspiring. www.beadforlife.com

Have her make a poster all about her. It's good therapy. Have her cut out pictures from magazines about things that say who she is and what she likes. Let her decorate it with glitter or paints or markers. Poster board at drug stores is less than a dollar.
I got a book the other day about dough crafts - mixing flour and salt and a little water and making animals, fruit, faces, etc. Bake in low oven over night and when cool you can paint them or not. you can get little magnet squares at Walmart and you can glue to the back to make refrigerator magnets. Pretty easy sounding.
Good luck!

Make your own flower press
The last time I went into the art store and saw little packages of pressed flowers for sale, I was shocked at the asking price. They were going for about four bucks a pop. Yikes, that’s a lot of money! Making your own is easy and inexpensive, and the project possibilities are endless. Here we go…
You will need:
* 2 squares of wood (approx. 6in x 6in.)
* Several pieces of cardboard cut to the same size as your wood
* Several pieces of plain white paper cut to the same size as your wood
* 4-5 in. bolts and wing nuts to fit.
* A drill
In each corner of the wood (approx. 1 inch in and 1 inch down) drill a hole. Do this in both pieces of wood. Then stack your cardboard and drill the same holes in each corner. Make sure you choose a drill bit that is slightly larger then your bolts.
Now all you need to do is pick your flowers. The later in the day you pick them, the better, as there is less dew and moisture then. Take the first piece of wood, lay a piece of cardboard down, and a small square of white paper on top of that. Lay out your flowers on the paper, then place another piece of white paper on top. And then a piece of cardboard. Continue until you have used all of the sheets of cardboard. or all the flowers, whichever comes first. Then thread your bolts through the bottom piece of wood, so they stick out on top. Lay your other piece of wood over them, and screw the wing nuts on tightly. Every couple of days you can tighten the wing nuts again to help press the flowers down. Check the flowers in about a week, they should be pressed and dry.
Now the best part: things to do with your beautiful pressed flowers!
Cards. Even a simple piece of plain paper folded in half with a pressed flower glued to the front looks lovely.
Add your pressed flowers to handmade paper. Once you have the paper on your screen, place the flowers all over the top of the screen, and then add a little more paper pulp to the top to keep them in place.
Frame them. You can layer your flowers to create a really nice looking picture perfect for framing. For example on a blank piece of paper lay a pressed queen annes lace (large), then a slightly smaller flower on top, then an even smaller flower. These look lovely on the wall

find a bright light or use a spot light for best effect. have someone sit in a chair very close to the wall, with one side against the wall. position the light so it makes a fairly life size shadow of the person. trace around the shadow on a piece of paper attached to the wall with tape or tacks. then cut it out and retrace it on some black construction paper so it looks like a silouette. lightly glue this black piece to another lighter color of your choice and frame it or make your own frame with more construction paper. for a more traditional look simply use white under black.

some friends of mine had a lil' get-together, one of them had a plan: she got a bunch of magazines...had everybody go through and cut out anything they wanted....words, pictures etc... then had them glue the things to a piece of poster board. in the end they had a montage' that reflected their personality, mood,interests.....for that day or beyond. they all looked pretty cool too, definately some fun, a good time passer and something that you wouldn't mind hanging on your wall. have fun!

Try "abstract art." My cousin and I did this with pieces of cardboard, we cut them, painted them, and glued them together in different patterns. I still have a couple of them on my walls years later.
