I was divorced in 1997. I kept my married name because of the kids - you know, school etc. The kids are older now and I want my maiden name back. Do I have to get a lawyer? I live in CT.

No, you don't. I was divorced in 1997 myself and at that point decided to change my last name to my grandmother's maiden name and not back to my difficult to say and spell maiden name. I also added a middle name since I wasn't given one at birth. To change your name it is done one of two ways. The court method, you get the forms at the courthouse, etc. Or, you do it by the usage method. I did mine by the usage method. I just changed it on everything, like someone else stated, change it on your social security card. I can't remember for sure but I may have changed it there first and the rest was pretty easy because I had documentation to prove it and the documentation kept building. That was about 9 years ago now and it has worked out good for me. I live in California but I'm pretty confident these ways can be done in any state of the US.

Because you didn't take your maiden name back when you divorced, you'll have to go through the legal process to change it. Contact the county clerk for the county where you live, and ask them if they can provide the forms. Otherwise, you can go here http://www.infoline.org/InformationLibrary/Documents/Name%20Changes%20-%20Connecticut%20fj.asp
and print the forms out.

You don't need a lawyer, what you would need to do is take a certified copy of your divorce decree to all of the places you do business with, (i.e., credit cards, drivers license, social security card, etc) and request a name change. That shows the reason why your are requesting a name change.

As long as you have ID to go along with your SSN, final divorce papers and other forms with maiden name and SSN appearing on one form. Go ahead and go to the SS Office and apply for your new card with you maiden name. Six weeks later you are what your parents named you again, at last.

Not generally.
Go to the courthouse, and see the County Clerk. He or she can tell you which forms you need to fill out.
It's actually very simple: one guy changed his name to "Trout Fishing In America," and another changed his to "Jesus Christ Hosanah."
