Since there is no true definition (as in Merriam-Webster), the meaning will be purely subjective. In which case it's whatever it means to you as long as it fits within the generally accepted understanding of what the phrase means.

If you take it literally, it means to think outside third dimensional reality (a box is a three dimensional object). If you are able to think outside third dimensional reality, you are allowing yourself to tap into pure mind beyond the physical, such as that achieved during meditation. When you meditate your brain emits Theta brain waves. And most of a person's "Aha" moments (when they "get it") happen when they are in a state of mind during which their brain emits Theta brain waves. Creativity occurs during this state of mind.
