How do they do it? I looked looked through one at my local library and could not find any indication of it!

If you're talking about the magnetic strip that beeps when you leave without checking out the material, the answer is yes. I work in a library part-time, and if I don't de-magnetize a newspaper or magazine it will beep on its way out. The strip can be REALLY small (about two millimetres wide) and hidden somewhere along the spine.

No, they're just as insensitive as the ones you get at the supermarket.
