how heavy a tank can you have before having to reinforce the floor?

whats the weight of your tanks?

1litre of water is 1 kilo in weight.

I shall explain a little better as its obviously complicated..

A fish tank (large one) over 3 ft or so is VERY heavy when full with water.

floors in houses are only designed to take a certain amount of weight on them, floorboards are only made of wood.

anyone who has a huge tank is advised to reinforce the floor with RSG'S basically scaffold poles under the floorboards that run the length of the room to stop the floorboards collapsing..

I want to know what weight people have got withought having to do this..

Im buying a 5ft tank and really dont want to have to spend the money on ripping the floor up..

If you put the tank against a load bearing - that is brick wall and which ever way the foor boards run, mount the tank the opposite way and that way it will sit across the maximum number of trusses and an inch thick sheet of ply wood should be sufficient to beef up the floor boards

I've got a 55-gallon tank on the second floor of a house in my bedroom - from what I understand, a gallon of water weighs roughly 8 pounds each, so I'm looking at 440 pounds plus the tank itself, plus all the gravel and decorations.. It's really heavy..

According to about.com, it weighs roughly 625 pounds filled. At any rate, I have no additional support, and I think everything's fine as it is.

It depends on the strength and construction of your floor; if you are on a concrete slab, there is no practical limit; however, if you are on any sort of raised floor, you should consult a structural engineer.
