Well, it must be partly because of the stereo typed Wagnerian singing style. Most people that think of classical singers think of them, and are immediately repelled.
But check out what classical singers can sound like.

I certainly do! But Pop and rock and rap are BLASTED constantly by the media everywhere, in order to sell sell sell! They don't care about art. They are NOT refined. The listeners know almost NOTHING about music save "i like it -DOI" and the mediocre performers are called "artists" when they have done little to deserve the title save wallow in mediocrity.
What the general public is lacking in is a real education in music, and thus the ability to distinguish between good and bad. Selling millions of records DOES NOT make you a "great artist"---
Just keep listening to GOOD singers. Remember, the most common element in the world is Hydrogen, and the second most common is stupidity.

I have respect for musicians but maybe not for singers. I actually kind of like classical music. I would not listen to it all the time though

i would not visit this point as asserting no one has appreciate for classical song/singers. some classical products and opera arias are dazzling. that's a question of being open-minded and embracing high quality, no count if or no longer that's classical or present day song.

It seems the moral corruption of society has led to a nearly complete inability in people to appreciate truly fine music.
