There are quite a few free anti-spyware programs available! I suggest that users should use at least 3 different products to regularly scan their systems. Most of these products are free for non-commercial use versions that have disabled some features, usually the active resident protection.
Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent program for scanning for and removing spyware. The resident modules can be a bit buggy, but the extra included tools such as startup manger are great! http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Adaware is another good scanner and removal tool but it has no resident abilities at all in the free version. http://free.lavasoft.com
Ewido is fairly new as a free spyware scanner, but it comes from the people who brought us AVG, so I expect good things: http://free.grisoft.com
Microsoft has their free scanner avalable for download although many advise that this tool is a bit permissive of questionable programs and add ons! Defender does offer a couple of options the others do not have such as scheduled scan and a resident process for active protection. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
A new player is on the scene with SUPERAntiSpware. I was fairly impressed with the deep scans performed by this product, and it found some inactive files with spyware embedded, that the others had missed. I will add this to the list of tools in the arsenal and see how it really performs on active spyware. If you want to try it you can download it here: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Once you have your system cleaned up of all the spyware, then you should protect yourself against new infestations. Spyware Blaster does a very good job and does not use up any system resourses in doing so. Works with both IE and Firefox browsers: This Download can be found at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Another good way to avoid spyware is to use the Firefox browser. While not immune from spyware infestation, you will certainly not have as many problems as when you run I.E. Easy Download at http://www.mozilla.com

FIREWALL
ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
WEB BROWSER - http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
and if you have a wireless router follow these tips,
1. Use WPA encryption (WPA-PSK) it's less crackable then WEP.
2. Make a passphrase that is upper & lower case and has some numbers thrown in there as well, again harder to crack.
some like mAkE1t5eCurE0rel53 and as long as possible.
3. Use MAC access control so only you or authorized PC's can connect (even if you do have encryption turned on)
4. Turn off DHCP use static addresses.
5. Turn off SSID (and change it) unless your card really needs it (some do)
6. Change username/password of access unit front end
7. Ensure you have the usual firewall enabled on your PC.
8. Paranoia rules, turn WLAN off if your not using it :)
one last tip
control panel---administrator tools--services--messenger
right clik on it
stop the service
then disable it
save changes

If you are on BT Yahoo! broadband then use the free 'online protection' (Norton antivirus) and that should help! My computer had the same Falcon spyware thing and I tried several different anti spyware programs but none worked like the BT Yahoo protection site!

first download Ad-Aware SE personal edition from lavasoft , AVG Free edition as anti virus and system mechanic (any version available in the net but as latest as possible).. Dont forget to update them with the latest updates available. (norton and other anti virus programs may conflicts with it so, uninstall them first) with avg and ad-aware you can start cleaning... see to it that you are disconnected with the internet, then perform a full system scan with avg, then, ad-aware and lastly system mech. (remove all parasites or viruses ) then clear the cache and restart computer (cold booting if possible). when you turn it on agian, do the same thing until your computer is 100% free of any parasites(usually takes 2 times). They thrives in you local mem or ram so, see to it you clear cache and delete histories.
hope it helps you
