Seeing as how there are SAT IIs as well as the regular SAT Reasoning test, I suggest you take your first stab at the regular SAT in your Spring term of Junior (11th grade) year and try again in the fall or winter of your Senior (12th grade) year if you need to do better. If you really want to prepare for the SAT, you can also take the PSAT around the Spring term of Sophomore year (10th grade) or fall of Junior. That's optional though.

You should take your SAT IIs after you completed a course, so I recommend taking the subject you are best in at the end of that year. Example: If you excel in US History, take the Subject test in June or May so you have better memory of the topic. Since there are finals around that time, you might as well study once for two tests! You can take more than one subject in one day.

Good luck :)

You can actually take the SAT at any age.

If you are serious about attending a 4 year college, I would suggest taking it once in the first semster and once in the second semester in your junior year. If you believe you can study and substantially increase your scores, a third try could be taken early in your senior year.

Sometimes, 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students take the SAT for various reason including placement in private schools, placement in gifted and talented programs, or simply to see where they stand earlier so they can prepare better for the test in their junior year.

Colleges generally frown on students who have taken the SAT more than 3 times ...

Enjoy the test!!!

I took the PSAT as a junior, and the SAT as a senior. That was "a few" years ago, however, and things may have changed in the past few decades.

If you are in the Honors program in my city, you can take the PSAT starting in the 7th grade. I take the SAT in my junior year.
