I have a theory about this. Good-looking people apparently possess a higher degree of symmetry in their faces compared to their less good-looking contemporaries. Sunglasses increase the level of symmetry in a face by concealing the assymetrical features around the eyes, and therefore the perceived attractiveness is increased. Any views?

Wow! I love your theory!! Very interesting!
And I agree with some of the others too, cause it's hiding the eyes... our eyes are the windows of our soles and we are so full of worries, pain and unforgiveness that our eyes tend to make us unattractive. Well in a way and not for all of us. Besides, those awful wrinkles also get to hide behind the attractive glasses.
Imagination is also a good reason for this, we as humans have favourite eye colours, so if you don't see the eye colour of someone, don't you think your own imagination will automatically add your own preference to the face?
And! Just like nice clothes and jewelry makes us prettier, well, we are dressing our faces with an accessory, we should look better with it!
Then of course, the law social idolising! For example, our eyes tell us that thin women are sexy. Why? Because it is socially accepted that way. I think because we socially accept that sunglasses make you look more attractive, you do indeed look more attractive! Imagine, there was no such thing as sunglasses, what would you think if perhaps your most ordinary neighbour suddenly appeared on the street with a pair of sunglasses on his face! He would have looked silly!! Except of course if your theory is the thing!!
This was an amazing question!! Wow!

They hide the wrinkles around the eyes. Hide much of the face in fact. Sunglasses imply holidays, sun and fun and so create a positive image for the beholder.

Well, I was going to answer this question with that same rationale you posited and you answered better than me...I'd just add that the symmetrical features of the shades are imparted to the wearer and also add to the perceived symmetry.

Most of the cheaper sunglasses in use today are useless in sunshine and continual use will eventually severely damage the eyes...some price to pay for looking cool

i heard that people who wear sunglasses look more attractive because of the mystery value of not being about to see all of their face. what i mean is, when you talk to someone you just meet with a pair of sunglasses on and later when you see them without can you really be sure who they are?

Well almost anything that covers a face that is considered ugly makes the person better.

However I'd rather see someones eyes, since eyes are the most beautiful part on a person.

sunglasses hide the wrinkles around the eye. Giving a more neutral look.

Sparky,

I think it makes people look shifty, hmmmm i don't trust em when i can't see their eyes. I think that's why the Internet isn't the best place to make friends. I know the symmetry thing is true and that Keano reeves is a babe in that film with the people with plugs in their heads (name escapes me) and there is a possibility that like goths the sun glass people are trying to conceal something. ohhhhhhhhhhhhh like Beardy men!!!!!!!!!! never trust someone hiding behind a bog off beard...... there i have spoken. He he hope it helps.

Eyes are the windows of the soul. Concealed behind shades people can stare as long as they dare.
