Go into the options for programs like your instant messenger and tell them not to load on startup. You can load them yourself when you need them. This both saves time at startup and saves memory until you do decide that you want to use that program and go start it. If you're not sure which programs startup automatically, check the tray at the end of your start menu bar... they often put an icon there.
Go to your Control Panel, navigate to the Administrative Tools folder, then open "Computer Management". This will pop up a small application that contains, among other things, the disk defragmenter (under the Storage category). Navigate to that and select Analyze. This will take a little while. When it's done, it'll tell you whether you should defragment or not. Follow its advice (or you may just want to skip the analyze step and go straight to defragment if you haven't done this in a while).
In games, disable graphics options that you don't really need. Like showing footprints in the snow someone has walked over.
