I always thought it was because of 9/11.

We had to defend ourselves (or at least we had a good reason to defend ourselves).

However, President Bush has said that Saddam Hussein and us being there has nothing to do with 9/11.

So why are we there? Just curious.

To those who said its because we want to give "freedom" to those people, why are so many of them dying?

And is it really our place to do this?
I feel that war (aka killing people) should be a DEFENSIVE move not an OFFENSIVE move. By saying we need to liberate these people by going to war with their country we are pretty much just using any excuse to go to war (in my opinion at least) and its not our place.

The US should not be responsible for any other countries than its own. We have enough problems internally that we really don't need to try to fix others externally.

We went into Iraq to establish a strategic military foothold in the Middle East.
there are billions of dollars worth of oil. And we are at peak oil production-- meaning it really doesn't have that much longer and the economy and multi billion dollar corporations are depending on having our oil reserves secured for the next several decades.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

There are thousands of babies and children being blown to bits, dying and suffering over there that you never will see on TV.
YOu will never see the damage done to the civilians on your sanitized news.

I'm not saying that the militant Muslims are not bad, they are, but we are GIVING them money., we are funding terrorism through oil and we have NO plans to stop., it will get into terrorist hands somehow, but that is perhaps why they want that foothold: to make sure the oil money gets into the hands of who THEY would rather it go to.
The paradox about that is that no matter who goes into power there, there is a risk they too will hate us, take our money and attack us and want to spread extremist Islam.

We need to convert to renewable energy and stop funding terrorism.
There is too much blood shed for money and greed.
Let the Islamic fundies choke on dust, or find their way out of the stone age some other way, we have done nothing but encourage them all these years by placing oil money in the pockets of evil, religious extremist governments.

-- Have you ever seen how cozy Bush is with The Saudi Arabians? It's quite disturbing when taken into account Most of the hijackers were Saudi and so was BinLaden....

Maybe we are in Iraq because George W Bush's mother wouldn't let him play with guns compounded by the fact that he didn't serve in the military when many young men his age were called to serve in Vietnam. He seemed so profoundly mediocre until the moment he stood atop the rubble of the World Trade Center with the rescue workers and vowed to get the people responsible and bring them to justice. At that moment he became the war president and things have never been the same.

Some serendipitous things have occurred as a result of the war. Energy prices and stocks have soared; War profiteering opportunities abound -- never has so much money been made for such little accountability; Extending the war on terror has enabled the president to trample citizens rights and expand the power of the presidency; Playing the fear card repeatedly allows the administration to exert undue power over a fearful electorate. So there have been some unintended consequences. Wow the consequences of this presidency -- who could have imagined -- to borrow a phrase.

Here it is. You see business gave the Republican party hundreds of millions of dollars so that they would get elected. Once in office business wanted a big ROI. The easiest way to do that was to start a war. The neo-cons had been wanting to invade Iraq since 91. But then 9/11 came and the neocons took advantage of this opportunity to start a war and since then business has been making lots of money selling products to the army. Did you read about the $45.00 six pack of coke? Congress just voted $78 billion more for the war bringing the total up to almost $500 billion. Right now they cannot account for $8 billion dollars. That is mostly likely a lit also. Most likely that total of money just lost is alot higher Remember when they said that the war would "only" cost $1.7 billion. Remember when they said that Iraqi oil would pay for the war.

I think there are at least three reasons.
First and most obvious is so that the Iraqi oil can be kept of the market to enable the price of oil to be raised from $25 per barrel to $75 per barrel.
The second is to keep an excuse for such a large military.
and the third is because Sadam Hussein pissed of Bush-whose-not-sane by accounting for the oil in the oil-for-food sanctions in Euros, instead of dollars. This was seen as the thin end of the wedge to destroying the dollar.

We are there so that we will have our freedoms. We are there to remove evil men from power. Men so evil that they want to kill us all and they would not think twice about doing it. These are people who delighted in the destruction of 9/11. This may be one of the most important wars our country has fought.

Well unfortunatly there are several things that have us there. One is the mis treatment of innocent hummans and of course even a hardcore conservative like myself has to admit that the oil is a prime reason. But if you want to know why I was in Iraq it was to show the people there that not everyone in america is evil and we are good people.

because he was aiding terrorists. He was in violation of many UN charters and regardless of how some people think Iraq does not have wmd's, I define them differently than do others. I think the french selling Iraq fighter jets is a problem, I think there is a lot of dangerous stuff buried in that country......eventually we're gonna find it and chances are UN nations will be involved in sales to Iraq of banned weapons related items.
