In modern-day European-based folklore, the "Grim Reaper" or "The grim spectre of death", was personified since the earliest days of storytelling. This personification of Death as a living entity is a concept that has existed in many societies, and the first reference is found in the New Testament. In England we see the "Grim Reaper" as a tall male figure, but in Latin societies it is seen as a female image or icon.

Don't know, but I once thought I saw the reflection of the grim reaper in a car windscreen and just as I was voicing this a car shot round the corner and narrowly missed me.

Death used to be a female deity, the goddess of the harvest.
When it became masculinized it kept its attributes.
