I am behind the times and own neither of them,going to try and get myself up to date,can anyone please tell me the main differences and which one I should purchase ?

well i bought my son a cheap mp3 player for only £11. Very good only small memory but its enough for him and when he breaks it i won't be too upset for £11.

Apart from the fact that an iPod is an MP3 player, I'd go for the iPod all the way. Best thing ever!

iPods ARE mp3 players. They just happen to be Apples brand. I have the iPod Nano and love it. My kids each have different brand iPods and they are not as easy to load and manuver with playback. The iPod has a number of accessories available such as the iHome alarmclock/charging unit/player/radio that is very nifty, as well as a Bose docking station available. After having gotten this and comparing it to what the kids have, I am regretting having got the kids anything other than iPod...

Don't buy any of em, if u buy em just to be popular, in about 1 year, u wont be popular from either, also, oth are a waste of money, but if i HAD to choose one, I'd choose an MP3 player, because it is easier to find free music for it off the internet, they r also smaller sometimes, also my friends MP3 player has video so that is another reason to get certaian ones

I think you should purchase the ipod with videos in it because mp3's do not have videos in them and, an ipod has better use and, better qualities but, if you get an mp4 then that's good too!

Well iPod is more popular and they're "in" right now. But it's not as good as they say it is. You should get a Creative Zen instead. It's got better features but if you want to get up-to-date get a iPod.

They are one in the same. Go to a store and test some out to see what you like better. I suggest iPod because they have refurbished ones you can get for a nice price. iRiver is good but a bit on the pricey side, actually it supports the pricey sides base.

ipod because they are easier to use, most ipods store pictures where mp3 players don't and you can get mini games on an ipod

i own an ipod, and i personally think its the best thing ive ever bought. :) it really is worth it worth it to go out and buy an ipod.
