I personally don't believe in the Adam & Eve story, but you're right -- it would imply that a good deal of incest had to take place to perpetuate the human race. I will be interested to see/hear what the religious people have to say about this.

Marrying a sibling is a sin only if the society says so. Society of the days which was only Adam and Eve and their offspring did not have any such code. So it was not a sin. Besides the offspring of Adam and Eve had children. But did they marry?

It is a sin and it's called incest! Adam and Eve's children had to interbreed for the sake of humanity to further human life. However, now that there are more people on the earth you don't have to marry your brother and if you did it would still be a sin because there are plenty of people inhabiting the earth therefore there is no reason for such behavior.

They did marry their own family, but the further away we get from the Garden of Eden the more sin is prevalent. If people married their siblings today there would be more birth defects.

Just read your bible, After Kain killed Able he fled and lived amongst the pagans. What I do know is that there will be some deviation in behavior with inbreeding.
