Imagine a rod 1 inch long, hang a one pound weight from the very end if it and you have one inch pound of torque. Torque is a twisting force. The higher the rating the more powerful the drill. This is about as well as I can explain it.

it is a standard rating to allow each company to give a comparision. the problem is each drlll may have several speeds and gear ratios. you could find a high torque drill that turns too slow or doesnt have long drilling time. stick with a name brand and expect to spend at least 100.

the more lbs per inch - the tighter the torque and thus the more powerfull the drill.

That just tells you the "turning force", not the max speed.
