The US is actually an Oligarchy. In a truly democratic country (or republic):
1. Any man/woman can run for office as long as they satisfy prerequisites that pertain to their integrity.
2. The people have the power and therefore the last say in regards to all important issues that will significantly affect their lives.
Nowadays, only the Rich are members of Congress or become President. They represent a tiny minority of Americans as far as income goes. How about the important issues?? Well, issues like going to war, or how much tax you pay, or even how your hard-earned tax money is used, are not issues that the people get to decide. And I saved the best for the last: In what kind of Democratic Society are Federal Judges entirely elected by the Legislative branch and chosen for election by the Executive??? The people have absolutely no say as to who will serve on the Federal Bench. Yet, these judges pass rulings that affect all our lives, like abortion rights and most disturbingly the outcome of Presidential Elections. The 2000 Election and the intervention of the Supreme Court was one of the greatest travesties in US history. It violated the Power of the People and was a blatant violation of the Separation of Powers. No Judicial authority should have the right to determine the make-up of the Executive branch and vice-versa.

The thing is we think we are living in a Democratic country but are we?
We are so easily controlled especially by the media
How much control do you really think we have. Just when you think its SAFE another control outbreak occurs and we need protection.
Since the 1900's the media has controlled public opinion and will continue to influence the minds of the public so democracy most people don't even know how to spell it

Technically yes, in the sense that we voted them in. But they are not behaving in a patriotic way. How can they be, when they want to hand the country to a foreign entity, called the EU. They are becoming more Totalitarian as each day passes. Remember, Hitler came to power in a Democracy.

Democracy is fiction basically. You have a rilling elite and their freshmen willing to sell their soul for power and are in hawk to the rich classes who want to maintain their wealth and their grip on the poor so the two sell this story of democracy which the dim fully "understand" and defend with their souls. And everyone is happy.

Dont kid yourself about the UK.Sure we have the right to vote but your freedom, rights etc end there. The government then control every aspect of your life.Even your rights as a parent end, they even control how you HAVE to bring your children up and if you look at the problem we have with the youth here, surely anybody can see the government are unfit "parents".

The United States is a Republic.
However, when 2 Presidential Candidates are imprisoned for trying to participate in the Presidential debates... and the story doesn't make it into the mainstream news media... I get concerned.

If you call it democracy if we are allowed to vote every x years and don't have the slightest inluence before or after....
Let/s face it: we live in an Oligarchy, we are ruled by a few politicians and the big bosses who pay them.
Oh and I'm not British or American, but it's the same everywhere.

If you are living in the United States, you are living in a democratic republic. That, at least, was how it was founded.

Of course, we live in a democracy where everyone is equal. It is just that some people are more equal than others.
