My dad did this years ago with his pear tree...I don't know what he used to "glue" the branch to the tree...some kind of black tar...it's really cool to have two different pear varieties on the one tree and I'd like to do that with this great tree I have out back as I love the pears there but want to remove the tree eventually because it's smack in the middle of my yard.

That's called grafting, and it's totally cool! The glue might have been grafting wax, which is used to seal and protect the cuts. A lot of times you wrap raffia around it also, Here is a web page with some info.

If you want to know more, do a web search on "grafting pear tree."

I remember my dad doing somehting similar with some orange trees when I was a teenager. I don't recall him using any type of "glue", all he did was take a nice branch from each tree and then bound the two branches together, tightly, with some yucca twine. I think stripping the bark on one side of each branch and then binding the branches so the exposed sides touch helps also.

What you want to do is called 'grafting'. You can get some very good information, just by typing in that word on Google. It may look difficult, but isnt really. Try it and you'll be happy with the results.
