i've always wondered what it was.
i know ngo, but not ng.
how would someone pronounce that?

Ng is actually a Chinese last name - or family name / surname, more accurately.

They typically place their family (last) name first, followed by their individual (first) name.

It is pronounced like this: ing.

As an example:

If you were to read the following sentence aloud, then the same 'ing' sound would be pronounced twice in a row.

"I was asking Ng the same question."

People think that it is Vietnamese, because a lot of their family names start with Ng - the most prevalent being Nguyen - which is pronounced 'Nwin', or as close to that as you can get without practice. (It's actually a sound that is not found in English - but Nwin is as close as you are going to get with standard English phonetics).

If a Vietnamese person knows who Charles Ng is, they will quickly point out to you that Ng is a Chinese last name.

One of my professors was "Dr. Ng" - he prounounced his name "ing" like the ending of an English noun or verb such as "walking."

i spent a year in viet nam and i can tell you this much: the name is not pronounceable in english . you have to make the "n" sound followed by the hard "g" sound. not impossible to do, just not english as english is spoken. hope this helps.

If you sre talking about the name "Nguyen" You pronounce it Nuin and it makes a "u" sound not like in the word "up"
