He was recently divorced; had a good job. What can we tell
his son, aged parents, etc.?

i would tell them that i may not know exactly what they're feeling, but if they just want to talk (or even if they just want someone to shut up and listen to them) i'd be there for them.
befriending them is the best thing you could do for them right now...

No one knows why a person would take their own life, and to speculate is not a good Idea. I would only speak of his good qualities, and your sorrow at his passing. You have a very difficult road ahead of you , and I am so sorry for your pain
