what you can do is to go to the actual carrier that u want to use ( if any) as in delta. united. or just go to cheaptickets.com orbitz.com any of those will give u ticket prices depending on the dates u want. and doing it like 7 days in advance gets you the cheaper tickets usually!

There is the price and then the price plus taxes. Every airline ticket will have three taxes added on. The Pax facility charge which is $3-$4.50 for every airport you go through, the security fee $2.50 per airport and the takeoff fee which is $3.30 per takeoff. When you call the airlines and ask for a price they usually quote it WITHOUT these fees, that is becuase the taxes are dependant on the itinerary. Hence a nonstop flight will be the cheapest. Connecting flights get hit with these taxes multiple times. Next there is advance purchase. All airlines offer cheaper prices for advance purchase tickets, but beware ask for change fees and cancellation fees. Sometimes airlines will have sales that come and go on a daily basis.
Most airlines have change fees. Orbitz or Travelocity are good places to start. If you find a price you like call the airline and ask about change fee then buy online. Sometimes an airlines own site will offer cheap internet discounts these are usually the cheapest fares.
One last thing every flight has multiple fares meaning there may be 10 different prices for the same flight. You can see all these prices for Southwest at southwest.com goto schedules and then click on the display fares. (southwest's website shows all the fairs clearly and if they available) Here's the problem the lowest fares may NOT be available on your flight. If price is the primary concern you can sometimes get the lowest fares moving to other flights in the day or up or back a day if you are flexible. Remember when you view fares on a fare page they DON;T include the taxes I've listed above you have to add those in.
Generally, tues wed and sat have the best fares and early morning or late night have the most low fares. Everything is supply and demand. The more people who want a flight the fewer discount seats it will have.

Get in touch with a travel agent, the will organize flights for you and it's usually always much cheaper than buying tickets online.

I find the travel web site like yahoo travel best because you select the cities and dates and then they give you a list of airfares from almost too many airlines.
