Depends on how bad the problem is. Store-bought ant traps or sprays are effective for small colonies. A whole-house fogger can be necessary for a serious infestation. If they are in the ground around and under your house you may need a professional exterminator. Always be careful with poisons. Borax and common bleached flour can also be sprinkled around doorways to form a somewhat effective barrier.

I had carpenter ants...I was getting ready to sell the house I was so disgusted with them...of course they invaded my kitchen where else! Had to keep everything sealed tight and every crumb picked up...you have to kill the queen in the colony too...my situation was different as carpenter ants are like termites and burrow a nice little home in your wood walls etc. It took me about 4 months...tried the ant traps...about 4 or 5 different types...nada...I researched on the internet and then got an idea....everyone said borax...on it's own it wasn't doing a thing but I mixed it up with icing sugar and just left little wads of the powder everywhere....that seemed to do the trick as they would eat it and die off and I guess eventually they must have killed off the queen too because I am finally ant free!
The other thing that works good if you don't have pets (that was my problem) is that liquid ant killer stuff...you can squeeze that under baseboards or wherever you see them coming out of.
It's also said that ants won't cross CHALK lines...so you can try that trick.
Outside I poured borax all along the perimeter of my walls where the cement met the house and along the bottom of the doorstep. This worked.
Also, keep plants that ants like well away from the walls of your house...same with wood...that is how termites and bugs (and mice) find their way into your home. Store firewood away from your house and garage...plug mice holes with steel wool as they can't chew through. I hate critters can you tell????

This is a cheap fix, buy some 20 Mule Team Borax laundry soap, put the dry powder in one of the ketchup squirt bottles that you can buy at any dollar store, snip the tip of the bottle off a little bit to make the hole a little bigger. Apply the laundry soap along baseboards, bottom of cabinets, along back board of counter tops, and around where the plumbing comes in under the sink and vanities, leave the soap lay for several days until you no longer see any signs of the ants, they will carry it back to their nest and it will kill them....vacuum up remaining laundry soap and dispose of it, and use the rest of the soap to do laundry with.
I have used this remedy for years, and it works.

There is a product called Revenge.

It works better than anything you've ever seen. You just put one small drop at the trail, and BE PATIENT. In about ten minutes, you'll have hundreds of ants on that one drop. In a few hours the drop will be gone, and so will the ants... Forever.

in case you have babies (or pets) Ben's answer is superb yet while no longer, much extra effectual is boric acid powder. you could pass away it in little piles the place the ants enter yet you additionally could make ant/lodges by making use of blending some boric acid powder with a splash sugar and then pass away a teaspoon of the mixture in little nutrition or prescription bottles, leaving OFF the cap. purely placed them the place necessary and each now and then empty and top off with mixture. It worked for my housing co-op.

If they are coming in from outside sprinkle garlic powder around your house. It sound really stupid but it truelly works! In doors you can use all the store bought contraptions you want but none of them really work that great. A fogger will usually kill them off for a little while. Wipe down your sideboards with white vinegar. They don't really like that stuff for some reason. It really does work. Try it.

I have an ant hill on my front lawn. I tried ant killing powder, didn't work.
Next spring I'm going to dig a whole and put new dirt where the hill was. (probably many eggs left in there)

outside, try and find some diazanon at the nursey.
inside, make a puddle of boric acid (comes in a dry powder) and honey - the ants take it home and kill the colony.

To get rid of ants:
Sprinkle their trail with baking soda, cayenne pepper, paprika or borax.
Plant mint just outside your house: ants detest and avoid it.
Best Wishes!!!
