I don't get it. The name of the family is the Huxtable's so why is the show called The Cosby Show? Yes I know Bill Cosby is the creator but that's not the answer I'm looking for. It dosen't tie into the show. (example Friends about a group of friends)

And the Mary Tyler Moore show wasn't about a character named Mary Tyler Moore. Neither was the Bob Newhart show about a character named Bob Newhart. Nor was the Dick Van Dyke show about a character named Dick Van Dyke.
It's because the actors have name recognition. There was no big name in the cast of Friends when it first appeared, so it wouldn't make sense to name the show after one of the actors -- besides, it was an ensemble show, not a show anchored by a well-known actor.

Its not supposed to 'tie' into the show. The name of the show isn't why people watch it, its the person who 'stars' in the show. I don't think I would have ever watched a show called the Huxtables, but I was very much interested in a show starring Bill Cosby.

basically it was a name dropper, people will see it because of the name, it all comes down to marketing.
you might not want to see the huxtables at first, but most will tune in to see bill Cosby

cause Bill Cosby starred in it and if it wasnt called The Cosby Show then he would probably end up throwing a fit like othe people with money and fame : )
