What happens if the button doesn't get pushed in the series Lost?

I'm wondering but I'm only on Season 2,Disk 4.

i think when the button gets pushed it releases some kind of buildup of electromagnetic energy so if it doesn't get pushed then the energy causes crazy things to happen (ie pulling planes down out of the sky)
