All string instruments are in C--that is, when you play a written C, it sounds like concert C. (An example of Concert A is 440 Hz.)

Bb instruments (e.g. clarinet, trumpet, tenor saxophone) are constructed so that if you play a written C, you'll hear concert Bb.

Eb instruments (e.g. alto saxophone) are constructed to produce concert Eb when a written C is played.

And so on for instruments in other keys (A clarinet, D trumpet, French horn in F, etc.)

Violin Key

The violin when tuned what is known as a C instrument but not necessarily in the Key of C, it will play off piano music where as a Bb instrument will not play off piano music.

After thinking about it, the Piano is in the key of C as the 1/2 tones are built into the key board with the white notes, so when playing in the key of C one generally will only use the white notes. In all keys the half tones are between the 3rd and 4th notes and the 7th and 8th notes of that key, so different black notes will be used. Like wise on the Violin the fingers will follow the piano without making any adjustments for the half tones, so yes it is in the key of C

C intruments are based on the note A which is set at 440 virbrations per second

I'm almost positive that it's tuned in the key of A.

Here's a site I found that has most of the stringed instruments and then links to the bottom for other instrument tunings.

Yes all F C & G are sharped. To write a key signature that showed all the Fs Cs & Gs would be very difficult to read. In first position alone you would have 2 F#, 2 C# & 3 G# for a total of 7#s.
