From my own reading, I highly recommend his trilogy:

Helliconia Winter (1987)
or
Barefoot in the Head (1969)
or
The Long Afternoon of Earth (1962)

I know one, "Super Toys Last all Summer Long." it's the story that the movie "AI" was based on.
